Monegasque Language Committee resumes work

Following publication of Sovereign Ordinance No. 11,219, dated 7 May 2025 and appointing the members of the Monegasque Language Committee, the Committee officially met to resume its work at Lycée Rainier III, in the presence of Mr Lionel Beffre, Minister of the Interior, and Mr Jean-Philippe Vinci, Director of Education, Youth and Sport. During this session, Ms Eliane Mollo was elected as Chair of the Committee and Ms Dominique Salvo was elected as Deputy Chair. Ms Isabelle Albanese, the coordinator for Monegasque language teachers, was appointed Secretary-General.

To provide a structure for the resumption of the Committee’s work, three sub-committees were established: on grammar, on lexis and the dictionary, and on promoting and spreading the language. The Committee will meet on a regular basis throughout the year to advance its work.

The role of the Monegasque Language Committee, which was established by H.S.H. Prince Rainier III in 1982 (Sovereign Ordinance No. 7,462 dated 27 July 1982), is “to work to protect and promote the Monegasque language, to undertake any and all studies and to put forward any and all recommendations for improving knowledge of the Monegasque language, particularly with regard to education programmes.” The meeting thus marks a new stage in promoting, passing on and showcasing the Monegasque language, which forms the core of the Principality’s intangible heritage.
